Traumatic Brain Injuries and Near Drowning Treatment

Two million people suffer from traumatic brain injuries each year in the US, half of those people needing emergency room visits and approximately 50,000 of those injuries result in death.

Drowning is the second leading cause of unintended injury-related death amongst children under 14 years old. They typically happen in a residential setting and are silent and quick. Two minutes following submersion the child will loose consciousness, with irreversible brain damage occurring 4-6 minutes into the initial incident.

Similar in etiology, near drowning and traumatic brain injured patients, the sooner treatments are administered the better the results. Secondary to the initial insult, ischemia or restriction of blood flow, and inflammation of brain matter have been implicated as the main cause of death, post severe brain injury. In terms of both ischemia and inflammation, it is theorized that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a direct and effective treatment plan. Oxygen under pressure is proven to reduce inflammation and dilate blood pathways, essentially reversing the effects of the injury. Stopping the rapid inflammatory response to the brain with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a pivotal movement the rehabilitation of a traumatic brain injury
