The role of Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in otolaryngology has mostly been investigational in the past but its clinical applications in disease of the inner ear are being increasingly recognized by physicians in Germany, Japan and China.
Tinnitus or ringing in the ears is the symptom most commonly associated with inner ear damage. It may be acute or chronic; the latter is more than a year’s duration. Excellent improvement has been seen in acute tinnitus using Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy.
Meniere’s disease is a triad of symptoms; roaring tinnitus, episodic vertigo and hearing loss. Most studies have reported benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
