What Oxygen Therapy Means for Cancer Patients
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which delivers 100% oxygen to the body at an increased atmospheric pressure, has been approved by the FDA for 14 health conditions. HBOT does not stimulate cancer growth
Because cells generally thrive in oxygenated environments, there have been some concerns around the use of HBOT in cancer patients. It was feared that HBOT would stimulate rather than inhibit the growth of cancer cells. However it has been proven time and again that this is not a legitimate concern. Otto Warburg, who won a Nobel prize in 1931 for his research on cancer, discovered that oxygen is in fact the enemy of a cancer cell. This is because cancer cells have an altered metabolism, making it impossible for them to produce energy through cellular respiration. Instead Warburg found that cancer cells produce energy through glucose fermentation. Dr. Thomas Seyfried found that cancer cells can also produce energy through amino acid or glutamine fermentation. This is also an anaerobic process which does not require oxygen. With this knowledge it has become accepted that HBOT cannot stimulate tumor growth. More recent reviews have indicated the same.
How HBOT can help cancer patients
HBOT can be used as a complimentary treatment for cancer patients undergoing radiation. Radiation is incredibly harsh on the human body. HBOT mediates the effects of radiation by delivering 100% oxygen to the damaged tissue and enhancing the body’s natural healing processes. furthermore hbot helps both with the regeneration of blood vessels and reduces inflammation in the bones and tissues resulting from the radiation treatment. HBOT enhances the radiosensitivity and chemosensitiviey of the tumor. it also elevates the body’s natural immune system, making it more effective in fighting infection and bacteria.
HBOT and the ketogenic diet
A new study involving mice with systemic metastatic cancer has shown that following a ketogenic diet results in a significant decrease in blood glucose and a slowed tumor progression. This resulted in the mean survival time increasing by 56.7%. When the ketogenic diet was combined with HBOT, the mean survival time increased by 77% and the blood glucose and the tumor growth rate showed significant decreases. It is hoped that more time and research will be spent on this to investigate its effectiveness as an alternative method of treatment, but for the time being, the world’s top researchers agree that HBOT combined with a ketogenic diet has a significant complementary effect at inhibiting tumor growth and increasing survival time.
